When you look for love online, you hope the stranger you meet is at least honest. But the Federal Trade Commission is accusing an online dating company of deceiving its customers. The FTC is suing Match Group, the company behind Match.com, Tinder and OK Cupid. They claim the company allowed fake dating profiles to trick people into signing up for a paid subscription. "There is lots. I've noticed that some have like just one picture of a guy or a girl," Ramsey said. They're not the only ones who think so. The FTC is suing the owners of Match.com, claiming "hundreds of thousands" paid to sign up with them after getting messages from fake profiles. "What they do is they can actually go out and buy fake profiles and put them on their site, so they make people want to go on there and join to start talking with all these people, but they really are just fake profiles," said April Davis, a professional matchmaker in Fort Myers. Some even feel that tactics like these are just another way for companies to profit from people's loneliness. "I understand that it's a business too, and they are trying to make profit, but that is not the way to go," said Nicole Kamin, another FGCU student. And while Match Group denies the allegations, the news is enough for some to look elsewhere for a love connection. There are also two other parts to the lawsuit against Match. The company guarantees a free 6 month renewal if customers dont meet that "someone special" in the first 6 months, but the FTC says Match.com wasn't clear about the requirements to get another 6 months free.
